Package free oat milk

Oat milk is one of the easiest (and tastiest) DIY recipes to build into your plant-based beverage routine. You can grab oats from the bulk food section and make your own inexpensive, package free milk alternative on the regular. Make sure you save your leftover oat pulp for oatmeal or other baked treats.

With just four ingredients, you can whip up a batch for the week in no time. Just make sure you give it a good shake before pouring! You can level up your recipe with a splash a vanilla, or keep it simple to balance out your next morning brew.

The secret to avoiding what’s known as “slimey” oat milk is to skip soaking, use ice cold water and avoid squeezing your oats when straining. Heat or activation will start to release the enzymes that break oats down when they’re cooked. You can add more or less water for a thicker or thinner consistency.

Homemade oat milk is another great way to reduce your kitchen packaging and try out some low waste recipes. What are you adding your oat milk to?

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rolled oats, organic if possible
  • 1/8 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 date, pitted
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla (optional)
  • 4-5 cups ice cold water (try putting a container or two in the freezer ahead of time, if needed)

To-Do's

  1. In a large blender combine oats, salt, date, vanilla (if adding), and water. You can reserve 1-2 cups water to test consistency. (I usually do 4 cups of water.)
  2. Blend on high for approx 30 seconds.
  3. Using a fine mesh nut milk or produce bag and large bowl, pour liquid from blender into the bag, over the bowl. Let excess liquid drip out of bag, do not squeeze! (I use a fine mesh colander to hold the bag while it drips, but not necessary.)
  4. Remove leftover oat pulp from bag and store in a container for later use. Try this oatmeal recipe.
  5. Strain milk 2-3 more times and remove leftover oat pulp.
  6. Enjoy! This stores well in the fridge about 4-5 days. Oat milk separation is natural, make sure to shake well before use.
